Defiant FAQ
About Defiant
1. What is Defiant?
Defiant is an independent, culture-led brand studio based in Antwerp, Belgium. We develop brand strategies, brand worlds, campaigns, experiences and collaborations that give brands a credible role in culture. We work with mid-sized, challenger, front-runner and founder-led brands that want to build lasting relevance, not just short-term attention.
2. Where is Defiant based, and where does it work?
Our studio is at Broederminstraat 7B, 2018 Antwerp, Belgium. Our work extends beyond Antwerp, with campaigns in Flanders, Wallonia and France and clients across Belgium. We bring local cultural understanding to projects with broader regional reach.
3. Who will I work with at Defiant?
You work directly with Lode, Karel and Maarten, our three-person senior core. Combined, we have more than 60 years of experience at advertising agencies in Belgium and Europe. There are no unnecessary layers or handovers. When a project requires specialist skills, we assemble a curated network of strategists, creators, makers and producers.
4. What types of brands does Defiant work with?
We work with mid-sized, challenger, front-runner and founder-led brands across retail, fashion, finance, sport, publishing and other sectors. Clients and collaborators have included JBC, Floralux, Kinepolis, Crelan, Garmin, KV Mechelen and Belfius Wealth House Aalst. The common thread is an ambition to build a distinctive brand world.
5. Does Defiant work with brands outside Belgium?
Yes. Defiant is based in Belgium, and our campaign experience includes work in France. We assess opportunities beyond Belgium according to the brand challenge, cultural context and required production partners. Contact us to discuss the market and scope of your project.
Positioning and approach
6. What does culture-led branding mean?
Culture-led branding starts with the people, communities, behaviours, scenes and rituals shaping how audiences live. Instead of treating culture as a trend to borrow, we look for a credible contribution a brand can make. We translate those insights into positioning, creative ideas and experiences that people want to engage with.
7. What is a brand world?
A brand world is the connected set of ideas, symbols, stories, experiences and behaviours that makes a brand recognisable and worth joining. It gives campaigns, content, collaborations and physical experiences a consistent direction across touchpoints, online and offline.
8. How is Defiant different from a traditional advertising or branding agency?
Defiant connects brand positioning, cultural intelligence, creative ideas and real-world participation in one brand world. Rather than starting with a channel or an isolated deliverable, we start with the business challenge and the role the brand can credibly play in culture. This can lead to an identity, campaign, community experience, collaboration or a combination of them. Traditional agencies can also offer integrated services; our distinction is the culture-led starting point and direct access to our senior team.
9. How can Defiant help a brand become culturally relevant?
We study the communities, behaviours, rituals and emerging signals that shape the audience. We then identify where the brand has a legitimate reason to participate and translate that opportunity into a consistent brand world, content, experiences or partnerships. Cultural relevance is not a claim we can guarantee: we define the intended audience response and business outcome, then assess the work against those goals.
10. How does Defiant work, step by step?
Our six-step approach is to decode culture; detect and activate communities; design online and offline experiences; build momentum; generate cultural currency; and measure business impact. The sequence connects insight and creative execution to measurable objectives. Our Floralux work illustrates how strategy, activation and ongoing evaluation can reinforce one another.
11. What happens at the start of a project?
We begin with a direct conversation about your business goals, brand, audience and challenges, rather than a lengthy credentials presentation. We then explore the cultural context and opportunities for a distinctive brand world. The next steps, team and deliverables depend on the agreed scope.
12. How does Defiant measure the impact of its work?
We agree on success measures before developing the work. Depending on the brief, these can include new customers, visits, sales, participation or campaign response. For Floralux, the goal was 5,000 new customers in three months with the same campaign budget; the campaign recorded 7,246, or 44.9% above target. This is a reported project result, not a promise of equivalent outcomes for every client. See our work: https://www.thisisdefiant.com/work.
Services and capabilities
13. What services does Defiant offer?
Defiant offers brand strategy and positioning, cultural strategy, brand-world development, campaigns, community experiences and activations, entertainment formats, tastemaker collaborations and content. We also publish Zeitfeed, our cultural intelligence platform. The exact mix depends on the business challenge.
14. Does Defiant offer brand strategy and brand positioning?
Yes. We help define what a brand stands for, who it serves, how it differentiates itself and how it should show up in culture. We turn that strategy into a clear brand platform and, where relevant, a visual and verbal identity, campaigns and experiences.
15. Can Defiant develop experiential marketing and brand activations?
Yes. We create brand activations, community experiences, events and entertainment-led formats designed to invite participation and build stronger brand connections. We develop the strategic and creative concept and work with specialist production partners where needed.
16. Does Defiant create TV, radio, social and digital campaigns?
Yes. We develop campaign concepts and content for television, radio, social platforms, digital channels and live environments. For Floralux, our work included sonic branding, radio spots, a visual identity and a TV spot for France. For JBC, we developed radio campaign work.
17. Can Defiant help brands connect with Gen Z and younger audiences?
Yes. We start by understanding the specific communities, media habits and cultural behaviours of the audience rather than assuming all young people think alike. Zeitfeed Weekly follows emerging signals across youth culture, entertainment, fashion, music, sport and the internet. We translate relevant insights into brand ideas and formats.
18. Does Defiant work on sports marketing and athlete collaborations?
Yes. Our work includes the KV Mechelen “120 years of craziness” fan campaign, projects involving Belgian athletes and collaborations around sporting moments. We approach sport through its communities, rituals, identities and cultural meaning.
19. How can Defiant help a retail brand attract new customers?
We connect customer acquisition goals with positioning, audience insight and creative activation. For Floralux, we repositioned a garden centre as a more welcoming home centre and focused communications on locations with growth potential. The three-month campaign reported 7,246 new customers against a target of 5,000, on the same campaign budget. The approach depends on the retailer, audience and available evidence; see the case collection at https://www.thisisdefiant.com/work.
20. Can Defiant help with community-led marketing and tastemaker collaborations?
Yes. We identify communities and relevant cultural voices, then develop collaborations and experiences that fit both the brand and the people involved. The aim is credible participation and mutual value, rather than one-off influencer exposure.
